Jimmy's life is defined by trauma and betrayal. After returning from France with a permanent limp and signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, he works as Nucky's driver and bodyguard. Frustrated by inaction, he hijacks a liquor shipment meant for Arnold Rothstein alongside Al Capone, an act that gets him sent to Chicago to work for Johnny Torrio. There, he befriends the disfigured marksman Richard Harrow. Upon returning to Atlantic City, Jimmy learns from his father that Nucky orchestrated his mother's rape. This revelation drives him to plot with the Commodore and Eli Thompson to overthrow Nucky. By Season 2, married to Angela with a son named Tommy, Jimmy is pressured by partners Capone, Lucky Luciano, and Meyer Lansky to kill Nucky. He agrees but hesitates when the assassin fails; later, he orders the death of Manny Horvitz's rival, Waxey Gordon. When Horvitz retaliates by murdering Angela and her lover in their home, a devastated Jimmy kills his own father, the Commodore, at Gillian's urging.

In Their Own Story

The narrative arc culminates in a tragic confrontation. After Horvitz's murder of his wife, Jimmy tries to reconcile with Nucky, helping him eliminate a witness against Nucky's election fraud case by killing Alderman Jim Neary and staging it as a suicide. Following a mistrial, Nucky claims he has kidnapped Horvitz but is actually luring Jimmy to his death. Knowing this, Jimmy goes unarmed to meet Nucky. He tells Nucky that he truly died in the war and attempts to explain the mechanics of shooting someone before Nucky shoots him twice in the head. In Season 3, sixteen months later, Gillian has not declared him legally dead and runs the Commodore's mansion as a brothel, using a corpse resembling Jimmy to maintain control until Season 4. There, Richard Harrow testifies against her and tips off authorities where the real body is buried, leading to Gillian's conviction for murder.
