His initial mission to bring down the kingpin unraveled when he killed Agent Eric Sebso and violated his religious values, accidentally impregnating Nucky's ex-mistress. Forced to hide her in his apartment to give birth, he spent Season 2 concealing these crimes before fleeing to Chicago as George Mueller after becoming a prime suspect. Months later, when three men ambushed him in an alley for revenge, he gunned them all down. By Season 4, he served as muscle for Al Capone while struggling with his second marriage to Sigrid. In the finale, learning of Eli's affair with Sigrid and facing death from the Capones, Van Alden attacked the brothers during a confrontation. He began confessing his true identity while choking Al Capone, only to be shot dead by undercover agent Mike Malone before he could strangle him.
