The Commodore's protégé, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, arranged for the Commodore to rape Gillian in exchange for a promotion to Sheriff of Atlantic City. Raised by his mother with Nucky acting as a father figure, Jimmy faced indifference from his biological father. He attended Princeton University where he met his future wife, Angela. In Season 2, it is revealed that Jimmy left school to fight in World War I due to guilt over a drunken sexual encounter with his mother and likely facing expulsion after assaulting a professor who made a pass at her. Stationed in France on the Western Front against Germany, his leg was wounded by fragments from a German grenade, leaving him with a permanent limp.

In January 1920, Jimmy returned to Atlantic City displaying signs of post-traumatic stress disorder and refusing to return to school. He worked as Nucky's driver and bodyguard but grew frustrated, eventually hijacking a liquor shipment sold by Nucky to Arnold Rothstein alongside Al Capone. After one surviving driver identified him, Nucky blamed the deceased Hans Schroeder and sent Jimmy to Chicago to work for Johnny Torrio. There, he befriended Richard Harrow, a disfigured marksman who became his main ally. By Season 2, Jimmy was married to Angela with their son Tommy. When partners Capone, Luciano, and Lansky pressured him, Jimmy ordered Nucky's assassination; Nucky survived after Clifford Lathorp killed the assassin. After Nucky's associate Owen Sleater blew up Jimmy's liquor warehouse, leaving him unable to pay debts to Manny Horvitz, Jimmy arranged for Waxey Gordon to kill Horvitz. When this failed, Horvitz killed Angela and her lesbian lover. Devastated, Jimmy killed his father when the Commodore defended Gillian.

By Season 2, Jimmy was married to Angela and raising their son, Tommy. When the Commodore suffered a stroke, Jimmy took over his operations. Pressured by partners Al Capone, Lucky Luciano, and Meyer Lansky, Jimmy ordered an assassination attempt on Nucky; Nucky was shot in the hand but survived when Clifford Lathorp killed the assassin. To pay debts to Manny Horvitz after Nucky's associate Owen Sleater blew up his liquor warehouse, Jimmy bought medicinal alcohol from George Remus. After hiring Waxey Gordon to kill Horvitz failed, Horvitz broke into Jimmy's home and shot Angela and her lesbian lover dead. Devastated, Jimmy attacked his mother when she spoke nonchalantly about the deaths. When the Commodore defended Gillian, Jimmy killed him.

Downfall and Final Confrontation

Jimmy helped Nucky secure a mistrial in an election fraud case by killing witness Alderman Jim Neary and staging it as a suicide. Nucky then claimed to have kidnapped Horvitz, luring Jimmy into a trap. Knowing he was being led to his death, Jimmy went unarmed to meet Nucky. He told Nucky he had truly died during the war and even explained the mechanics of shooting someone. Nucky shot him twice in the head, killing him. Sixteen months later, Gillian ran the Commodore's mansion as a brothel using a body resembling Jimmy until she was convicted of murder in Season 4 after Richard Harrow tipped off authorities to Jimmy's burial site.

Reception and Production Notes

Series creator Terence Winter planned to kill Jimmy from the beginning of Season 2, originally intending for him to survive longer. The decision was made to push the story to its logical extreme: Jimmy betrayed Nucky by trying to have him killed, so Nucky killing him was the only honest conclusion. Rumors that Jimmy was killed because actor Michael Pitt was difficult on set were denied by both Pitt and Winter. Pitt won Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in 2010 and 2011 with the cast and was nominated for a Monte-Carlo Television Festival Award. The show's "undercut" hairstyle became popular at barber shops across the US.
